When I worked in college radio, I got the chance to go to the CMJ Convention in NYC. There was also another convention held in Austin, but just couldn't swing it. In the early 90's, SXSW was up and coming, nowhere near what it is today. While reading up on this year's conference, it is amazing how much it has grown.
In addition to just music, it also provides exposure for social apps. Foursquare and Twitter were aided by testing in SXSW. Some new apps this year include GroupMe, an app that allows you to group text. SXSW has grown from a music convention to something more. They also hold a filmfest and SXSW Interactive. SXSW Interactive has a wide variety of workshops, meet-ups, etc. Some interesting panels include the future of WordPress as well as recording a podcast with Chris Hardwick. Gotta admit, some of the panels might be just ridiculous.
