Minor league baseball competes with the movies for the family entertainment dollar. As one baseball promotions guy said, "I need to put butts in the seats". They do this through many avenues; newspaper ads, tv ads, mascots around town, etc. Social Media was made for this.
This first post will focus on Facebook and Twitter. What makes a popular Facebook page? Several factors. First, what information is on the page? Is it a Wikipedia page? Does it just announce the game being played that day? Or does it have contests and giveaways, announces promos, picture caption contests?
Let's look at the number of fans:
Wikipedia Entry: 1,997
Announcing upcoming games: 12,885 Likes
Interactive: 13,269 Likes
Using Twitter is also a method to get people to come to the park. Twitter can be overkill or repetitive and may not be as effective. For example, my beloved Bulls like to tweet updates at the bottom of every inning. Blah. I would rather read the write-up the net day. Quit filling me up on tweets! Sometimes, they merely repeat what they posted on their facebook page. Grr... Then you have some that are highly interactive and different from their Facebook page: Cheers for originality!
What other social media and Web 2.0 technologies could they use??? Just wait until the next post!
