Shut 'Em Down!!

Since Egypt shut down the access to the Internet, let's take a look at social media and government change.  As Ray points out in his blog, other countries shut down/restricted internet access, including Iran.  Of course, don't forget about 2007 and Burma.  One article on Wired interviews Tunisia's Internet chief about that although in the last years of Ben Ali's regime, they just blocked sites not the whole internet and were basically too late in reacting.  Countries that did block access, still have regimes in power.

A really good, quick primer on internet blocking with some terms really make for some good reading.  It is going to be interesting to follow what happens in Egypt and Yemen.

  1. Good job. This is a really volatile situation. It will be interesting to see how long they keep the internet down. If they keep it down very long commerce will suffer more than it already is.
